Emma's Cross Country Trip

Emma, Jamey and I went to Rhode Island last week - Wednesday-Sunday - for cousin Tom's wedding. This was Emma's first cross country airplane ride and boy did she do well! She is such a great traveler. She really didn't cry and slept a good portion of the trip. We flew in and out of Boston and the weather in Boston wasn't great. The ride was a bit rocky so we were happy when we landed. It was also really cold and she wasn't dressed properly. I made a make shift hat for her (see picture) but luckily we weren't outside for long. We went to the hotel and got a crib - it looked more like a prison. Well, when it was time for Emma to go to sleep she had a really tough time. Emma thought she was being locked up in it and cried and cried. She kept waking up, which is very unlike her. She woke up at 1, 4 and a bit before 6. We finally put her in our bed which is something we have NEVER done before and she slept. Emma was really off all day Thursday. She didn't want to eat and wasn't herself. The trip was really hard on her. She got a lot better Thursday evening and even slept through dinner. That was a special treat for us as we don't usually get to go out to dinner.

On Friday Emma got to see her Aunt Meredith, Jason and her Grandma Barbara and Ron. It was very exciting for her and she enjoyed spending time with them. It was great to see the family and we all just hung out. We took a tour of the Vanderbilt mansion and Emma absolutely loved it. She was looking all around and took everything in. Jamey and I realized that it is definitely time to take her to the Zoo and the Academy of Sciences. She will really enjoy going to those places.

At night, Emma had to stay with a babysitter when we went to the rehearsal dinner. We were very nervous how she was going to do but she did wonderfully! The sitter Kristin was a dream. She was really sweet and caring and was great with Emma. When we got back to the hotel we asked her if she wanted to move to San Francisco :) Kristin stayed with Emma the next day while we were at the wedding. We felt really comfortable leaving Emma in her care. Again, Emma was excellent and we were so proud. It was really great to know that we could leave her with a stranger especially since I was going back to work on Monday.

The trip back home on Sunday was just as good. She slept the majority of the way – it is obvious that she likes to be held! She was a bit jet-lagged and went to bed really early. She also woke up really early – 5:20 am which was tough considering it was my first day back to work.

During the trip we obviously had to give her a bath and she took a bath in a big girl tub. I took baths with her which was lots of fun. I enjoyed that and she did too. I will do that more often now at home.

But overall the trip went well. It was hard on her but it was really nice for her to spend time with Jamey’s family.
